VIVAnews – Armed conflict in Syria has recently been the utmost concern of the Sukabumi Regency, West Java, following data of Sukabumi Manpower and Transmigration Agency showing that 28 Indonesian workers from the area are working in the heated nation.
They left before the moratorium for sending workers to the Middle East was issued.
“The 28 people are registered to have left [for Syria] before 11 July 2011. We’re concerned about their condition and we’re trying to find out about their whereabouts,” Head of Sukabumi Manpower and Transmigration Agency, Aam Amar Halim, told VIVAnews, on Wednesday.
Until now, the agency are still gathering information about their location.
“Until today, we haven’t received any news on the return of Indonesian workers from Syria. We also want to know whether or not their families have communicated with the workers in Syria,” he said. “We’re concerned that they have become victims of conflict in the country.”
In order to repatriate the workers to Indonesia, the agency continues to coordinate with the National Agency for Placement and Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers (BNP2TKI) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It is expected that all workers from Sukabumi could be soon brought home safely.
“The central government acknowledged that they are dealing with difficulties in sending the workers home due to lack of data as many of the workers left the country illegally,” he said.
Jejen Nurjanah, Chairman of the Indonesian Migrant Workers Union (SBMI) in Sukabumi bolstered the steps taken by the local government to repatriate the 28 workers from Syria.
“The Indonesian workers [in Syria] must be sent home soon because there’s no security guarantee for them,” said Jejen.
In recent weeks, more than 180 people were killed in the towns of Houla and Qubari, Syria. Dozens of the deceased were children. The United Nations said more than 9,000 people have been killed since the unrest began last year in Syria.
